An existing home has advantages all its own - established yard and plantings, often draperies are included, a faster occupancy time. If your time frame permits, by all means check out the possibility of building your own home - it's an experience unlike any other and can have many advantages including high appreciation of value and just the fun of being the first to own a home with the colors and amenities that you yourself choose - look at both.
