What sources can I use for my down
payment?
The obvious sources are either savings or the
proceeds from the sale of a home you already own, but, there are other sources
not so obvious. For instance, "parent power" has come into use in recent
years for the first time home buyer; the 1981 federal tax law allows a tax-free
gift up to $10,000 from EACH parent, the receiver pays no tax on the "gift"
and the parent does not have to pay a federal gift tax. Where a gift is
concerned, many lenders will require a "gift letter"to verify that parents
do not expect repayment. Other sources include profit sharing, life insurance,
stocks, and bonds.
